''Exactly a month after Wilbur Wright's death, there was another death much nearer at hand and also of considerable interest - though indirectly - to aviation historians. Marie Lilienthal, sister of the great German flight pioneer Otto Lilienthal, died at Fairview on 30th June 1912. Fairview is a small country community about twenty-four kilometres due south of Waitohi and just inland from Timaru. Marie had emigrated to New Zealand, married George Squire of South Canterbury, and lived to the age of 55 years. Her grave, which Tom Bradley located in the Timaru Cemetery, had a memorial erected over it which is in memory of Marie, her husband and son: '....also of her brother Otto Lilienthal first inventor of the flying machine, killed near Berlin August 10th 1896'. Lilienthal flew a whole series of monoplane and biplane gliders between 1895 and 1896, greatly increasing the knowledge of stability and control in the air. He was on the point of developing a powered glider when he died after a crash. His experiments considerably influenced the Wrights, and Richard Pearse must have at least known about them, but there is no indication that Pearse and Marie Lilienthal ever learned of each other's existence.''
