"Inventor Claims to have Perfected New Air Machine.
Berlin, Feb. 23.–A flying machine with one-third horsepower engine, driven by bicycle gearing, and with planes or wings or constructed that different adjustments permit the aero craft to travel at a moderate rate of speed, ist what Gustav Lilienthal, a German inventor, is claiming for an aeroplane, which, he says, has passed its experimental stage.
The German also claims that with the machine's perfection, he will have claims which will invalidate the patents of the Wright brothers, and a type of flying machine which will solve forever conquest of the air.
'My attorney believes I have a good case against the Wrights,' said Mr. Lilienthal today. 'He thinks we can collect royalties on our 1894 patent, which they infringed. But I am convinced the process would be so expensive as to be prohibitive.
'Anything with wings will fly if sufficient motor power is supplied. Phe problem is to fly slowly.
'My machine is now undergoing its final weight tests. It can be operated by one-third horsepower. this means that it can be driven by one-man power. To my mind it is the solutio of flight.
'I was led to my solution by watching the albatross, which cannot rise when the wind is low. It gets up into the air by canting the curved wings forward to the proper angle to get the wind pressure. When the wind pressure is sufficient I raise the wings of my machine in the same way, without muscular of motor energy.
'The Wrights adopted the curved wings, which was half the problem. Where they failed to progress is in failing to further pursue the problem of wing adjustment.
'my machine, which is almost ready for flying tests, has nothing to do with the machine I have invented which is driven by bicycle gearing. I expect to start from any housetop kor raised mount where I can get a leap forward against the wind.'"
