Beschreibung:

vonllständig transkripiert. Digitalisat vorhanden, darunter zahlreicher Lilienthal-Bezug: Herring 19.9.1894: "i constructed during the summer two Lilienthal machines, one of 129 sqare feet, which weighed 14 3/4 lbs, 20 ft spread, ist was the first, but my lack so skill in sailing it caused me to break it; the longest flight with it was about 80 ft, wis a descent of 17 ft. The second machine I built to withstand any heavy shocks which might occur from my unskilled handling, it also folded into much smaller space, with the machine, which weights 16 1/2 lbs and spreads 132 square feet, I was able on one occasion to fly 150 ft or more; the fall (taken with a level) was 17 1/2 ft." Es folgt ausführlicher Trainingsbericht.
Am 5. Nov. 1894 schreibt Chanute: "I have lately begun the revised plans of a soaring apparatus, quite different from Lillienthal [sic], from which I expext automatic equilibrium. Can you advise me where I can have it built? It is very simple, but it requires some care in arranging the surface, making the joints &c. I had thought to go to a manufacturer of bicycles, but should be glad to have your advice before deciding."
Am 15. September 1895 schreibt Chanute: ""As Glasford & Baldwin are still anxious to experiment, I have just arraged with a carpender, who has a jobbing shop back of my house, to build a soaring machine on my design. At their request, I had written to Lilienthal for one of his machines, but he makes it a condition that the parties shall buy his American patents."
