Moedebeck, 14.Aug. 1896: "Unfortunately I have to announce to you a most dad occurrence, the death of Lilienthal. From information received upon inquiries made to his brother, I learn that he succeeded in changing arbitrarily the position of the horizontal tail through a motion of the head, at his last experiment on the 8th of August. The cause of the accident is not yet established. He fall fram a height of 15 meters, the apparatus lay unturned upon his back, the supports of the upper pair of wings were shattered and driven into the ground. [...] I personally lose in him one of my most valued and dear friends." Chanute, 30.
