Der Brief enthielt offensichtlich den Wechsel über 1000 $, der Beleg dafür ist in der Library of Congress erhalten, ebenso wie der Entwurf des Briefes. Die Datierung des Schecks ist 2.12.1911, ein im Museum erhaltener Briefumschlag (id652 L4111) ist gestempelt 9.12.
"Dear Madam: As you already know we have great admiration for the work of your deceased husband the late Otto Lilienthal, and it has been a matter of much regret to us that we never had the pleasure of his personal acquaintance. He was a great man.
As a token of our appreciation of him we beg that you will accept the enclosed exchange for one thousand dollars with our best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
